Overcoming Procrastination with Hypnosis

Overcoming procrastination isn’t that hard. So I guess we can get to that tomorrow. Well, therein lies the problem. You keep putting things off to a tomorrow that never comes. Eventually, you either forget about it, or you find yourself facing up against an impossibly close deadline where you will need to either pull an all-nighter or work 16 hour days to just get it in on time. More than likely, though, you will just end up delivering your work late. This is not good, because it makes you seem as though you are not to be counted on. However, you can stop this brutal cycle and start getting work done on time and maybe even early. Through hypnosis, overcoming procrastination is possible.

You know all the pep talks by now. They usually boil down to, “Get it done early and you won’t need to worry about it later.” This is true and even the worst procrastinator will agree with it. However, a few words are not going to change the fact that you do not get things done early, so you always do need to worry about it later. Thus, the vicious cycle of procrastination puts you behind on one project, leaving you no time for other projects, which also end up late because you had to worry about the previous project. This is not good.

However, you can start changing your habits by changing your attitude toward work that needs to get done. Hypnosis can give you the impetus you need to get things done early and start getting them done well before they are due. By working with you mind to help it not only understand that work needs to get done, but make those platitudes actually stick, you can begin overcoming procrastination and get those projects out the door.

Sometimes the catchy phrases and the occasional efforts aren’t enough when overcoming procrastination. You need something more powerful. Instead of knowing what you need to do, you need the drive to ensure that you actually do what you need to do. Overcoming procrastination can become a lot easier with hypnosis. Sure, hypnosis will not actually get the work done. But it can give you the mental energy and discipline to start your projects early and get them done early. Then, as you continue to work earlier and more effectively, you will not need to worry about overcoming procrastination. Because you will have overcome it and you will start seeing the positive results that come from working that much longer on your projects.

What is NLP?

As a certified NLP trainer, I am often asked ‘What is NLP?’

The term NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and was coined in the early seventies by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. They began their work by studying: Fritz Perls, psychotherapist and originator of the Gestalt school of therapy, Virginia Satir, well-known family therapist and Milton Erickson, a world-famous hypnotherapist. Their intention was to model outstanding therapists (i.e. identify patterns) in order that others could use these patterns to generate similar results. You may say that NLP is about identifying excellence, and then devising means for others to use those patterns to achieve similar results.

And NLP is more than that.

NLP also draws on earlier work, such as Ivan Pavlov’s conditioned reflexes (1904). In NLP this is called anchoring. You could say that NLP takes theoretical results developed by others and makes them available to you and me so that we can improve our lives and well-being.

And NLP is more than that.

NLP had its origins in therapy and is now applied in all areas of human endeavour - education, health, sports, business, and the list goes on. For a list of NLP books and audiotapes, please see www.renewal.ca/books.htm.

And NLP is much more than that.

Let us look at the terms Neuro Linguistic Programming.

Neuro refers to your brain and your neurology. It is about how you take in information. For example, you can use your eyes to see something. Other ways to experience an event include: hear, kinesthetic (tactile touch or emotional feeling), gustatory (taste) and olfactory (smell).

Linguistic refers to the language — pictures, sounds, feelings (kinesthetic), tastes, smells and words — that you use to remember a particular experience (or to forecast a future experience). For example, did you have breakfast this morning? When you remember having breakfast, can you see a picture in your mind, can you hear sounds (maybe a radio was on or someone said something to you), what about tastes and smells, how were you feeling - happy, tired, excited?

For a future experience, do you see yourself being successful? Or failing? The pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes, smells and words that you use to describe future experiences have a bearing on what actually happens! You do create your own reality!

Programming refers to your habits, patterns, programs, strategies, etc. If it is a workday, do you follow a particular pattern, as you get ready for work? Maybe you like to lay in bed an extra 5 minutes after the alarm goes off. Do you shower right away or have breakfast first? If you take time to look at what you do, I am sure that you will see a pattern that you follow in getting ready for work. If for some reason you do not follow that pattern, do you find yourself feeling that something is missing?

You have patterns, habits, strategies, programs for everything you do. Some of these patterns serve you, others do not - resulting in unwanted outcomes. You maybe fully aware of some of your patterns. You may become aware of other patterns only when someone else brings them to your attention. And you may choose to quickly forget about these patterns because you do not want to address that part of your life. And there are still other patterns that you are not aware of at all; yet they continue to influence how you look after yourself, communicate with others, etc. If the patterns serve you - generate positive results in your life - great! If you find that some patterns do not serve you, would it be useful to discover which patterns they are and to change them?

Question: Who put your patterns, habits, strategies, programs in place? You did! So who can change them? You can! First, you must be aware that you run these patterns. For me, this is one of the biggest benefits of NLP - become aware of the patterns, habits, strategies, programs that I have been running unconsciously and then use NLP techniques to change them so that I achieve the outcomes that I desire.

And NLP is MUCH more than that!

In subsequent articles, we will explore NLP in more detail, giving you insights as to how you function, how you communicate with others and how you can change your life, if you choose.

Changing Your Life

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis to unlock the capacity of the unconscious mind to bring about therapeutic changes by modifying deeply-held assumptions, fears and misconceptions.

The issues that prompt people to turn to hypnotherapy for assistance include:

Phobias
Pain management
Panic attacks
Performance enhancement
Habits e.g. smoking
Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
Stress management
Performance anxiety
Insomnia
Confidence, self-esteem and assertiveness

What Hypnosis Is

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind, enhanced by deep mental and physical relaxation. Without knowing it everyone drifts into and out of mild hypnotic states daily. These periods of time are commonly referred to as day-dreams or running on autopilot .

Hypnosis has nothing to do with being asleep or unconscious in any way. You are able to hear and remember everything, and will know exactly what s going on.

People often worry that, under hypnosis, they can be made to do things they would not ordinarily agree to. This is incorrect: you remain in control all the time and cannot be made to do things that you genuinely object to.

Participants in entertainment and stage hypnosis shows are fully aware that they will be asked to act in silly ways, and they implicitly agree to this at some level of their mind.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is simply the process of using hypnosis to unlock or access the unconscious mind, and to bring about therapeutic changes by modifying deeply-held assumptions, fears and misconceptions within it.

There are two forms of hypnotherapy:

Suggestion Hypnotherapy or Clinical Hypnotherapy

The hypnotherapist guides the client into a relaxed state and enlists the power of the client s own imagination using a wide range of techniques from story-telling, metaphor or symbolism to the use of direct suggestions for beneficial change.

Analytical Hypnotherapy or Hypnoanalysis

This therapy is rather more intense and requires several sessions. It involves an in-depth analysis of the individual s inner fears, blocked and unresolved feelings and repressed memories and is carried out in a quiet and gentle way allowing the memories and emotion to flow and release anger, fear and hurt of the past.
