The Arthritis-Hypnosis Connection

Did you know that we all have the ability to enhance self-healing, increase comfort and improve nutrition, exercise, communication and flexibility? This article explains clinical hypnosis and how it can bring relief to clients suffering from arthritis. Hypnosis is easy to learn, you can do it on your own and it empowers you to take an active role in your healthy well-being.

The subconscious mind has many jobs. It quietly and effectively regulates our bodily functions and stores all of our values, beliefs and memories. It also balances our blood pressure, heart rate and co-ordinates each step we take everyday of our life. The negative effects of arthritis extend into many areas of a client s life, as does the positive resolve and relief of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is the simple process of accessing and directing the subconscious mind to support certain positive changes. It is the language of the mind, it access the most powerful level of awareness and down loads new applications of freedom and relief.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It causes a deterioration of the protective lining of cartilage in our joints. This deterioration occurs due to a breakdown of the chondrocytes that form cartilage. Osteoarthritis affects men and women equally. Most people over 30 years of age have some features of early osteoarthritis. The degree of limitation depends on the location of the inflammation. The major areas of concern are hips, knees and spine. The development of osteoarthritis may be related to trauma, aging or heredity.

The symptoms of stress play a big role in exacerbating the situation. Communication with family and friends plays a key role in managing stress and hypnosis makes this a lot easier. Suggestions offered to a client during a hypnosis session encourage them to share what s on their mind enabling them to offload concern and frustration, giving them more time doing things they enjoy.

It takes energy to deal with any physical or emotional burden. Hypnosis creates ideal sedation allowing for sound sleep. We all follow the path of our most dominant thoughts and if the last thoughts a client has at bedtime involve deep restful sleep, they are in a much better position to recharge their body and mind for tomorrow s challenges.

For those suffering with arthritis it s often difficult just keeping up with the fast pace of day-to-day life. Hypnosis helps individuals adjust to a more appropriate pace and also to release the frustrations and anxiety associated with any limitation. Clients who routinely relax with hypnosis are more centered, balanced and less affected by things they can not control.

Increasing muscle tone reduces stress to affected joints, which increases mobility and comfort. Low impact activities like swimming; walking and range of motion exercises are commonly recommended to clients with arthritis. With hypnosis it s easier to integrate new regimes and to establish positive subconscious connections between healthy activity and improved mobility, comfort and freedom.

The more protection in your joints, the more comfort and mobility you create. Since the subconscious controls the multitude of our bodily function, hypnosis can direct it to increase the production of chondrocytes, which increases the growth of healthy new cartilage. Pain is often the biggest issue with arthritis. Some pain, however, is necessary; it acts as a warning system telling us that something isn t right. The responsible approach with hypnosis is to only reduce unnecessary pain, leaving intact the body s ability to signal us and protect us from further complications.

Hypnosis can also be used to regulate the flow and distribution of endorphins, which are the feel good chemicals the body uses to create comfort and relaxation. Using hypnosis to regulate endorphin production plays a big role in putting the client in control. Hypnosis can also alter the perception of where the pain is located. By redirecting sensitivity away from key areas such as hips, knees and vertebrae to a less critical part of the anatomy like a finger tip, the client has much more control.

The same approach can be used to attach a different quality to pain. A sharp pain can be perceived as dull; burning pain can be perceived as cool. Involving other senses is one of the distinct advantages hypnosis offers in managing the symptoms of arthritis. Another technique involves using one color to represent pain and another to represent comfort, and then blending the two offering instant relief.

Lastly, by attaching a number value to pain creates the option of change. By imagining a yardstick during hypnosis a client can pick the number that best reflects their current level of pain, and then they are directed to different numbers which changes their perceived level of discomfort.

With hypnosis arthritis sufferers gain a distinct advantage in managing and even reversing the limitations of arthritis. Hypnosis is simple, empowering and extremely effective. A few sessions with a hypnotherapist gets you started and with a little practice you begin to effect healthy positive changes in your life. We all have remarkable self-healing abilities and hypnosis is an excellent way to jumpstart a return to a healthier more active life.

Hypnotic Myths

Even though hypnosis has been around officially since the 1700s (Franz Anton Mesmer), there are still questions as to its validity and benefits. For the most part, these questions stem from fear and ignorance. Regarding this subject, it is generally assumed that what you don t know can hurt you. People s viewpoints on hypnosis vary according to what their experiences have been and what they ve heard.

I am a stable, responsible, levelheaded, intelligent person. I am also a licensed hypnotherapist. One of the requirements for finishing hypnotherapy training was to go out and practice what you ve learned; my obvious targets in this endeavor were primarily my family and friends.

My oldest child staunchly refuses to have anything to do with hypnosis, even now (I ve been a hypnotherapist for 6 years.). She is not a child; she is in her early 30s and is a successful video producer. Still, she says that she s not going to do something that might get her lost somewhere and unable to return.

My second child has volunteered to be hypnotized by me numerous times. He loves the experience. He enjoys how relaxed it makes him feel, and he believes that he derives great benefit from it.

My third child is aloof about the whole subject. He doesn t validate or discount it one way or another. He s just to busy to give it a try.

I am curious about people who draw conclusions about hypnosis when they haven t actually experienced it in some way. It baffles me how a person can discount it when hypnosis has not negatively impacted them or someone they know.

I ve had people tell me that hypnosis is the devil s work , yet I know of pastors who practice hypnotherapy in their counseling practices. I ve had professionals say to me, Yes, but does it actually work? Well, does dieting actually work? Does imagery actually work? In order for something to actually work the user has to have a certain amount of belief in it. So, whether or not hypnosis actually works depends on the belief of the subject and to some degree, the skill of the hypnotherapist.

 You cannot get lost while hypnotized. There is no place to get lost to. You do not leave your body or your mind behind and go off somewhere.

 No one can put thoughts into your head or make you do things that you would not ordinarily do. Your own core values cannot be violated by another; if, under certain circumstances, you could be moved to bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken, then a hypnotic suggestion to do so would not violate your core values.

 Others cannot take over or control your mind. Your mind has 2 components: the conscious mind, which is the objective part, assists you in making daily decisions and analyzing data. The subconscious part is subjective, and this is where your creativity and abstract thinking lie. The subconscious is inclined to believe what you tell it. For instance, if you think something, then to your subconscious mind, that is so. It does not analyze facts; if you think it, then it accepts it as fact. If you think that others can control your mind, then for you, that is true. But only because you allow the idea to be a fact for you.

 Anyone can be hypnotized. What happens when you re watching television and someone tries to get your attention? Have you ever been driving down the road, only to look around and see that you ve gone much further than you thought? When you focus your concentration to the point where everything else is screened out, then you are in a state of hypnosis. Hypnosis narrows your focus and concentration. You do that when you are intent in a conversation, or performing any activity that decreases your awareness of things outside of yourself.

Hypnosis is not a mystery. It is not evil, and it is not mind control. It is simply a way to temporarily bypass the rational mind in order to facilitate desired changes. Many, many people have successfully undergone hypnosis and achieved their goals.

Rita Ballard, C.Ht. is a hypnotherapist licensed in the state of Washington. Trained in the Erickson methods, Rita uses hypnotherapy to assist others in achieving their goals. Of primary importance are the spiritual aspects of a person: who they are and what they mean to themselves. The movement towards self actualization is the passion behind Rita s work. Jealousy Making You Turn Green? Turn To Hypnotherapy

Cain killed Abel because he was jealous of him. Da Vinci Code says St. Peter was jealous of Jesus affection towards Mary Magdalene. Jealousy has been a part of human existence since the time our forefathers walked this earth, and even today it is one of the most common emotions that affect people across the world. We could go as far as saying that it s the most human of all emotions, and it s natural to feel jealous from time to time. But if it is this human, why is it called the Green Monster? It s because if jealousy goes unchecked it can bring about obsessive behavior, uncontrollable anger and can even lead to violence. It is at such a stage that intervention is required to keep jealousy at bay, and this is where a session of Hypnotherapy could help you.

Jealousy is a result of an overactive imagination, and is further fuelled by insecurity that a person might be afflicted with. When this imagination and insecurity coincide, what takes place are ugly scenes, in the mind of the person who is jealous. A simple action or word spoken by your partner can take on epic proportions, as you play out scenes of infidelity over and over in your mind.

In most cases this suspicion is unfounded and can only lead to hurting and mud-slinging. If one lets it remain that way, a lot of anger and bitterness can be left festering in both the partners, which could eventually lead to the death of what otherwise could have been a happy relationship.

How can hypnotherapy help you in curing an emotional problem such as jealousy? One of the first things to be established when you consult a practitioner for hypnotherapy is that your jealousy is the result of immense love for your partner. But they will also tell you at the same time that the way you channelise this love might be misguided. Your intentions might be noble, but the route you take to demonstrate the love is not right. Controlling someone s life to protect them is not the best thing to do. In love, one needs to let go. And this is exactly what you will learn.

Hypnotherapy makes you aware of the core issues in your past that act as triggers for this jealousy. It helps you create a positive self image, so that the insecurities are done away with. It helps you in being calm, confident and positive; and you will be surprised at the changes you will see in your partner s behavior. Remember negativity breeds negativity and the best gift to give yourself and your partner is to make efforts to get out of these negative emotions and work towards nurturing a relationship.
