The practice of hypnosis has been around for hundreds of years, but has recently been added to the growing list of alternative practices used in private clinics to treat ADHD. The use of hypnosis offers a more direct path, so to speak, into the mind to help make changes in deep-rooted behaviors.
Suggestive hypnotherapy is completely different from the traveling stage hypnotist performing tricks for audiences, like having a volunteer cluck like a chicken. Rather, clinical hypnosis tries to access parts of the brain that have not been available to change since they have not been addressed through traditional therapy. A more direct path is sought into the mind to help make changes in certain behaviors that affect a person with ADHD. This is achieved through narrowing the focus of concentration, facilitated by the hypnotherapist. Once this focus is narrowed, the hypnotherapist then retrains the mind to use symbols and colors to help focus the mind on concentration, memory and then action. Action being, that which is controlled through the environment.
Many people with ADHD, especially children, tend to be kinesthetic learners. Meaning, they need movement in order to learn or pay attention. Often they will be seen tapping their pencils, their hands or standing up and sitting down while listening to a teacher or the person talking to them. They are able to “absorb” information through movement or action. This can be distracting to other people. By teaching the person to focus on a symbol or a color they may use this symbol kinesthetically, in their mind, help them to focus on what they are learning. I also recommend they hold in their hand a stress ball; this allows them to kinesthetically learn without distracting others.
It is my belief that individuals with ADHD are gifted. They have the ability to multitask and often get bored doing one thing at a time. Unfortunately, we live in a world in which learning does not complement this type of mind. Instead of changing the way these special people think, hypnosis can teach them to use their innate gifts and to function in the western world.
There are many books available that provide teachers, parents and individuals with different techniques that can assist with the treatment of ADHD. Two books that I would recommend, “The Indigo Child” and “Left Brained Children in a Right Brained World.” These books can help people to better understand how those affected with ADHD can fit more comfortably into today’s society.

You are getting relaxed and intensly concentrate on my words…hypnonsis can be very effective. This form of natural healing has a long history of use; with there even being evidence to suggest that ancient societies used forms of hypnosis in religious rituals. There are many professionals that continue to use including psychologists, psychiatrists and by certified hypnosis therapists.

1. Prejudices About Hypnosis

Hypnosis is most often related to entertaining stage shows where an audience participant is hypnotized and then does crazy things, like pretending to be a chicken. Hypnosis is also thought of by some as a tool to use to aid with the cessation of smoking. Hypnosis can be much more than a form of entertainment of a tool of self-help. Hypnosis can also be used to aid in the recovery of illnesses and injuries.

2. Forms Of Hypnosis

As with the medical field, there are many different forms of hypnosis. In one form of hypnosis, guided imagery is used. With this form, hypnotist guides the person into a relaxed state. This relaxed state is usually accomplished by helping the person visualize his stress and release it. Hypnotism can also be done through the use of direct suggestion. Through direct suggestion, the hypnotist puts the patient into a trance and repeatedly tells him to feel a certain way. Since the patient is more receptive to suggestion while in this trancelike state, he is easily convinced by direct suggestion.

3. Pain Relief

Hypnosis has been shown to aid individuals with pain relief. In fact, clinical studies have shown it to help relieve pain in patients suffering from cancer, burns and leukemia. It has also been shown to reduce pain in women undergoing childbirth and in dental patients undergoing dental procedures. Hypnosis has been shown to be an excellent alternative to individuals who do not wish to use highly addictive pain relievers, such as morphine, to relieve chronic pain. In fact, hypnosis has been used by some patients as the only analgesic while undergoing cardiac, abdominal, genitourinary, and breast surgery. Amazingly, those who use hypnosis rather than medicine for pain relief found their relief to be far superior.

4. Childbirth

Examples of those who use hypnotism are woman to reduce pain during childbirth, and cancer patients claim that hypnotism reduces pain while undergoing chemotherapy. In addition, many cancer patients believe hypnotism helped them recover from the disease.

5. Hospital Illness

Hypnotism has had such amazing results that major hospitals are even beginning to use hypnotism to help patients relieve pain and recover from illness more quickly. In fact, the University of North Carolina uses hypnotism to help patients control irritable bowel syndrome.

6. Recovery

Lots of research has been done on the road to recovery on this subject. Much research has been performed in the effects of hypnosis in recovery. One study was published several years ago that found that hypnotism before surgery helped patients require less pain medication. These patients also experienced fewer complications and were able to leave the hospital quicker than patients who did not receive hypnosis. If you look at brain research, hypnotism actually alters brain functioning and activates specific regions of the brain to control ability to focus and pay attention.

As a hypnotherapist and NLP Master practitioner, it gives me great joy to be able to share with you one of the most commonly used and simple techniques. The way it is explained to you below, is exactly the way I use it, and by following the simple steps below you can achieve instant access to positive feelings and emotions.

Anchoring is a valuable tool used by hypnotherapists and NLP Practitioners. It is one of the simplest techniques available and can create massive and powerful changes of state in another person in an instant.

Just imagine having access to your most resourceful state- confidence, creativity, motivation, relaxation, power- at the touch of a button.

1. Why use Anchoring?

Anchoring is an NLP technique used to move a client very quickly, into a positive resourceful state (emotion). This could be used to get someone into a confident state when giving a presentation or perhaps a relaxed state when confronting a fear or phobia or to give instant motivation when faced with a challenge.

2. What is an Anchor?

An Anchor is an internal state which is triggered by an external stimulus. For example, have you even caught a whiff of someone’s perfume and been reminded of someone that you know, and had an experience of feeling all of the feelings that you have towards that person? Or perhaps you’ve heard a song that has, literally, in your mind, taken you back momentarily to a time in the past or a specific event?

The Anchors we create when using NLP and hypnotherapy and Kinaesthetic anchors (the positive internal feeling is triggered by a touch).

3. How do you create a Positive Resource Anchor?

Recall a time in the past when you have felt the way you want to feel when your Anchor is fired. As you vividly remember that time, remembering everything you saw as if you were seeing it again, back through your own eyes, hear what you heard and feel the feeling you had at that time.

When the feeling is at its strongest, “anchor” it by making a gesture, or gently pressing or squeezing an appropriate and accessible part of your body, e.g. making a fist, pushing the palm of your hand etc.

Break your state by jiggling your body or moving in some way then repeat the above using a different and equally positive memory from the past, then anchor that. Repeat this several times to make the anchor strong.

Then test how strong your anchor is by breaking your state and then firing it off. Notice how great you feel!

4. What if…..? Your questions answered!

If your anchor is weak, try anchoring more vividly remembered times. Make sure you really put yourself into the state and remember to apply the anchor at the peak of the good feeling.

Apply you anchor in a unique place/ way. You wouldn’t want to have an anchor for elated joy by shaking your hand as this might not be an appropriate state to go into each time someone shakes your hand! Your anchor must also be located somewhere upon you that is easy for you to repeat and fire off later, without making you look suspicious in front of others!

What if I work in a business setting, how could this be used?

Anchors don’t have to be created and triggered by a touch. You could use your voice in a certain way every time you want to get others into a motivated state or perhaps Anchor key words, such as trust, to yourself, when selling your product in a presentation. So verbally you are saying to your customers that they can trust the product you are selling, but you anchor the word “trust” to yourself.

There are many other techniques involved when creating major lasting changes in people’s lives. For more information about what these are and how they can be used to tackle specific problems, visit the link below and get in touch.
