How to Stop Hair Pulling With Hypnosis

How to Stop Hair Pulling With Hypnosis
Stress caused by the day-to-day issues of home life and work can bring people to their breaking point. Many people struggle with the feeling of wanting to pull out their hair. Problems arise however when you reach the point where you actually do pull your hair out. The actual scientific word for hair pulling is trichotillomania. French dermatologist Hallopeau created the term in 1989 when he saw the results of hair pulling in his patients. The Trichotillomania Learning Center estimates that there are between 6 and 8 million Americans struggle with trichotillomania.

How To Know That You Suffer From Trichotillomania
So, if you have pulled your hair out in the past, how do you know for sure whether or not you have trichotillomania? DSM-IV, or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, offers five different symptoms of the disease.

The first is pulling out your hair repeatedly, leading to “noticeable” hair loss.

The next is a feeling of tension right before pulling out your hair or when in you “attempt to resist the behavior”.

Third is a feeling of pleasure, or relief. The next two can be summed up in the following: the “disturbance” is not “better accounted for” by either a medical condition, such as a dermatological condition or another “mental disorder”, and in addition the “disturbance causes impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning”.

What You Should Know
There are several things that you need to know if you are struggling with this disorder. The first is that as mentioned above there are at least six to eight million other people going through the same thing. You are not alone. In addition, you need to understand trichotillomania. The Mayo Clinic offers that trichotillomania is not something that you choose to do. The hair pulling urge that you often feel, is very hard to overcome, so do not judge yourself for these feelings. Beware of how you approach your trichotillomania. Many people fall into a depression because of their trichotillomania. This with the combined physical traumas that your body goes through creates a problem that needs to be corrected.

How Does Hypnosis Work?
If you are dealing with trichotillomania, you need to get help. Hypnosis should definitely be considered. So how does it work? Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis does not equate to your eyes spinning in your head as a result or being put into a numb state by a dark figure. Instead, it is a process of tapping into your subconscious. What is your subconscious? It is the section of your brain that deals with the automatic actions you do throughout the day. Starting your car or taking a shower, for instance, have become immediate parts of us that do not require conscious thought.

In the normal day to day, you exist in your conscious brain, thinking through problems as they arise. When you sleep, your subconscious is allowed to reign. The process relaxes and subdues the conscious portion of your brain, allowing your subconscious portion to come forward.

While counseling may change behavior on a conscious level, hypnosis works to change the subconscious level. With a hypnotist, you will work to equate hair pulling with something negative, like nausea and when you feel the urge to pull out your hair, the negative will help you avoid it.

Top 5 tips towards effective relaxation techniques

As a general rule we all face much more demanding daily lives. The working day is getting longer and longer, and more of us are required to work longer hours or even get second jobs to pay for mortgages and other bills. As such, we find it difficult to give ourselves the time to relax and wind down that we need. Our body and mind need this time to rejuvenate and recover from the daily grind. A failure to take time out from this hectic daily schedule can have detrimental effects on our physical and mental well being. Even when we do get time to unwind we often find ourselves worrying about work or family matters and this can be just as damaging. By employing effective but simple relaxation techniques we can avoid stress, depression and physical illness.

1- The body and mind are very closely related and this means that there are a number of exercises that can be adopted that will not only improve our physical well being but act as excellent relaxation techniques. Techniques like this have been employed in yoga and other meditative arts that have developed over a great many years in many different cultures.

2- Relaxing the body will go a long way to improving your physical condition, however, the most effective relaxation techniques should combine the relaxing of the body and the mind. You should shut out any stressful thoughts about work or home; perhpas try repeating one word or short phrase over and over and if any obtrusuive thoughts do come into your mind then you should concentrate on the repetition again.

3- Only you really know the things that you find relaxing and you should try to do them as often as possible. Even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time you should make time. Just because your partner finds that relaxation techniques include playing sport or watching television doesn’t mean you have to do the same.

4- There are many different relaxation techniques from self hypnosis to yoga and others. Find one that interests you and suits you and learn about it. Study it carefully before you enrol in a course or begin teaching yourself. The key to good relaxation techniques is that they shouldn’t be difficult. If they are difficult that will force you to think about it, giving you stressful thoughts.

5- Don’t get stressed about relaxation techniques. If you’re struggling with an exercise or technique don’t worry. If you’re falling asleep every time you try self hypnosis or meditation don’t worry. These techniques are designed to help you not give you more things to worry about.

NLP: Your Pathway To Personal Success

As a certified NLP trainer, I am often asked, “What is NLP?”

The term NLP stands for neuro-linguistic programming and was coined in the early seventies by John Grinder, an assistant professor of linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Richard Bandler, a student of psychology at the university. They began their work by studying Fritz Perls, a psychotherapist and originator of the Gestalt school of therapy, Virginia Satir, a well-known family therapist and Milton Erickson, a world-famous hypnotherapist. Their intention was to model outstanding therapists and identify patterns in order that other practitioners could use these patterns to generate similar results. It may be said that NLP is about identifying excellence through an exploration of patterns, and then devising means for others to use those patterns to achieve similar results.

NLP also draws on earlier work, such as Ivan Pavlov’s conditioned reflexes (1904). In NLP this is called anchoring. NLP takes theoretical results developed by others and makes them available to you and me so we can improve our lives and well-being.

NLP is more than just techniques. It is a curiosity about how people who are high achievers accomplish what they actually set out to do. It is also a methodology that assists you in discovering those thinking and communication patterns that prevent you from being successful and shows you how to achieve the results of successful people. That is, NLP is a process of discovering the patterns of excellence of experts, and it makes these effective ways of thinking and communicating available for others to use for their own benefit or to assist others.

NLP had its origins in therapy and is now applied in all areas of human endeavor - education, health, sports, business and, perhaps most importantly, interpersonal relations.

Let us break down and analyze the terms neuro-linguistic programming.

Neuro refers to your neurology - sense organs. It is about how you absorb information. For example, you use your eyes to see things in your world. You also experience or perceive events through your other senses: aural (hearing), kinesthetic (tactile touch or emotional feeling), gustatory (taste) and olfactory (smell).

Linguistic refers to the language - pictures, sounds, feelings (kinesthetic), tastes, smells and words - that you use to remember and make sense of a particular experience (or to forecast a future experience). For example, can you recall your breakfast this morning? When you remember having breakfast, can you see a picture in your mind, or can you hear sounds (perhaps a radio was on or you were engaged in a discussion with your family)? What about tastes and smells? And how were you feeling - happy, tired, excited?

Think about a significant event in your near future. Do you envision yourself being successful? Or failing? The pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes, smells and words that you use to describe future experiences have a bearing on what actually happens. You do create your own reality!

Programming refers to your habits, patterns, programs and strategies. If it is a workday, do you follow a particular routine as you get ready for work? Perhaps you like to lie in bed an extra five minutes after the alarm goes off. Do you shower or bathe right away or have breakfast first? If you take time to look at what you do, I am certain you will see a pattern that you follow in getting ready for work. If for some reason you do not follow that pattern, do you find yourself feeling that something is missing?

You have patterns, habits, strategies and programs for everything you do. Some of these patterns serve you, but others do not - resulting in unwanted outcomes. You may be fully aware of some of your patterns. You may become aware of others only when someone else brings them to your attention. And you may choose to quickly forget about these patterns because you want to avoid addressing that part of your life. And there are still other patterns that you are not aware of at all, yet they continue to influence how you look after yourself, communicate with others and perform your daily tasks. If the patterns serve you - that is, generate positive results in your life - great! However, if you find that some patterns do not serve you, would it not be useful to identify those patterns and to change them so they work to your advantage?

Question: Who put your patterns, habits, strategies and programs in place? Of course, you did. So who can change them? Only you. But first, you must become aware that you run these patterns. This is one of the biggest benefits of NLP - becoming aware of the patterns, habits, strategies and programs that you have been running unconsciously and then using NLP techniques to change them in order to achieve the outcomes you desire.
